U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today announced the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) have awarded $11,307,342 in federal and state funds. These funds will allow communities across Upstate NY to make their sidewalks and crosswalks compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA).
“Individuals with disabilities have the right to live independent, fulfilling lives,” said Senator Schumer. “We have a responsibility to make that a reality. In part, that means ensuring that our sidewalks and crosswalks accommodate the needs of all Americans and all New Yorkers. This new federal funding will be an enormous resource in that effort and will allow communities across Upstate New York to complete urgently needed upgrades.”
The following communities will receive funding to upgrade their sidewalks and crosswalks:
-$3,400,000 will allow communities in Upper Westchester to make their sidewalks and ramps ADA compliant
-$408,088 will allow communities in Northern Westchester to make their sidewalks and ramps ADA compliant
-$304,992 will allow the Village of Dobbs Ferry in Westchester County to construct sidewalks and ADA-compliant ramps
-$145,000 will allow the Town of Harrison in Westchester County to construct new ADA sidewalks and provide access to the local Metro-North Railroad station
-$120,000 will allow the Town of Irvington in Westchester County to construct ADA compliant ramps and crosswalks
-$2,761,006 will allow communities in Rockland to make their sidewalks and ramps ADA compliant
-$360,000 will allow the City of Port Jervis in Orange County to construct an ADA compliant pedestrian mall
-$360,000 will allow the City of Kingston in Ulster County to construct new, accessible sidewalks, ADA-compliant ramps and pedestrian beacons along a school route
– $88,256 will allow the Village of Red Hook in Dutchess County to improve ADA access to existing pedestrian facilities within the village
-$1,200,000 will allow Coeymans Hamlet in Albany County to make ADA improvements and pavement maintenance within the area
