U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today announced that Syracuse Hancock International Airport in Onondaga County will receive $720,000.00 in funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for airport upgrades. The federal funding will be used to fund the installation of a passenger boarding bridge to improve efficiency of operations and meet passenger needs.
“Keeping our airports in top-notch shape is crucial to attracting business and tourism to the region,” said Senator Schumer. “With this funding, the Syracuse Hancock International Airport will be able to make the critical upgrades necessary to keeping the airport in top-shape for the passengers and pilots that fly in and out of Syracuse every day.”
“This funding will help support critical infrastructure upgrades to Syracuse Hancock International Airport,” said Senator Gillibrand. “Hancock Airport is vital economic anchor that Central New York businesses and travelers rely on every day and I will continue to push for funding for resources that enhance efficiency and safety.”
“Our federal partners have done important work securing funding for our airport, a vital transportation hub and an engine for regional economic development,” said Syracuse Mayor Stephanie A. Miner. “I am pleased that the airport has received this funding for important upgrades. I look forward to working with our federal delegation and the SRAA leadership to continue to find ways to improve the customer experience and economic development potential of our airport.”
“We would like to thank Senators Schumer and Gillibrand, and Representative Katko for their continued support of the airport,” said Christina R. Callahan, Executive Director of Syracuse Hancock International Airport. “The airport has undergone a great number of improvements over the year, many which the public can now enjoy. It is critical that we continue to make improvements, to modernize the facility, enhance the passenger experience, and it is through the support of our federal delegation that we are able to do this.”
This funding for Syracuse Regional Airport Authority is part of the Airport Improvement Program and is administered by DOT’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The Airport Improvement Program provides grants to public agencies for the planning and development of public-use airports that are included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS). Funds obligated for the AIP are drawn from the Airport and Airway Trust fund, which is supported by user fees, fuel taxes, and other similar revenue sources.
