Schumer, Gillibrand Announce $234,000 In Federal Funding For Westchester County Airport

Jun 5, 2015

U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today announced that Westchester County Airport will receive $234,000.00 in funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for airport upgrades. This project will fund the design to rehabilitate 2,950 feet of the airport’s existing access road to maintain access to the airport.

“Keeping the Westchester County Airport in top-notch shape is critical for residents and Westchester businesses who regularly use this airport,” said Senator Schumer. “These federal dollars will go a long way toward helping the county make much-needed upgrades to the airport’s access road, allowing passengers to safely arrive and depart from the airport and easing the traffic burden on the local community. These repairs will help ensure the airport continues to be a regional leader of commerce for years to come.”

“This funding will help support critical infrastructure upgrades to Westchester County Airport,” said Senator Gillibrand. “Westchester County Airport is vital economic anchor that businesses and travelers rely on every day and I will continue to push for funding for resources that enhance efficiency and safety.”

“I’d like to thank Senators Schumer and Gillibrand for working to secure these funds,” said Michael Kaplowitz, Chairman of the Westchester County Board of Legislators. “The Westchester County Airport is a first class regional airport and a critical element for local business development.  It also serves the tourists and families traveling for pleasure in and out of the Lower Hudson Valley and metropolitan New York.   These funds will go toward maintaining essential infrastructure improvements at the airport.”

“Westchester residents are thankful that we have partners in Washington like Senators Schumer and Gillibrand who understand our needs and can deliver real solutions, like this one, to the challenges that our communities face,” said Catherine Borgia, Majority Leader of the Westchester County Board of Legislators. “The County airport is a significant asset that makes Westchester an appealing place to live and do business but unfortunately, various parts of our infrastructure, including main roads like the County Airport’s access road, have deteriorated over time as a result of difficult winters and other circumstances.  This grant to rehabilitate a vital arterial of the airport is welcomed news for those who use the airport and all of the taxpayers of Westchester County.”

This funding for Westchester County Airport in New York is part of the Airport Improvement Program and is administered by DOT’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The Airport Improvement Program provides grants to public agencies for the planning and development of public-use airports that are included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS). Funds obligated for the AIP are drawn from the Airport and Airway Trust fund, which is supported by user fees, fuel taxes, and other similar revenue sources.
