Addressing the passing of AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand issued the following statement:
“The world and the labor movement have lost a giant. Richard Trumka’s life took him from the coal mines of Pennsylvania to the greatest halls of power, and no matter where he went, he never stopped fighting on behalf of his fellow brothers and sisters in the labor movement. He recognized that working people are the engine of our economy and the heart of our communities. His advocacy for fair working conditions and dignity for all working Americans was unparalleled, he stood in steadfast solidarity with international workers fighting for human rights, and he upheld the fundamental principles of fairness and equality. I want to extend my deepest sympathies and prayers to Richard’s family, friends, and brothers and sisters in the labor movement. He will be deeply missed.”
