Addressing the Supreme Court’s decision to allow the Texas abortion ban to go into effect, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand issued the following statement:
“The law in Texas – and the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold it – is dangerous, disturbing and unprecedented. It bans abortions after six weeks – when most won’t even know they are pregnant, includes no exceptions for rape or incest, and deputizes citizens to harass and sue those who help facilitate access to abortions. The Supreme Court has effectively overturned precedent, allowed a clear violation of the constitutionally guaranteed right to an abortion, and cleared the way for states across the country to follow in Texas’s cruel footsteps. This cannot stand. No one should have to live in fear of providing or helping someone access a medical procedure that nearly one in four women will need in their lifetime. I will continue fighting for judges who will protect this constitutional right and to ensure Congress passes federal law to protect access to abortion care – because constitutional rights and access to health care should not be limited based on the state you live in.”
