Today, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand released the following statement on the House passage of the bipartisan Setting Consumer Standards for Lithium-Ion Batteries Act, legislation that would establish the first federal safety standards for lithium-ion batteries used in e-bikes, e-scooters, and other micromobility devices.
“Just last year, cheaply made lithium-ion batteries used in e-bikes and e-scooters sparked hundreds of fires across New York City, killing 18 people and injuring dozens more. I’m proud to lead this critical bipartisan legislation to regulate these batteries and prevent future tragedies and am thankful that the House passed it last night. I look forward to getting it passed in the Senate and to the president’s desk immediately.”
Gillibrand is the lead Senate sponsor of the Setting Consumer Standards for Lithium-Ion Batteries Act, which would require the creation of the first ever mandatory consumer product safety standard for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries used in micromobility devices.
