Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced $285,000 in federal funding for the Schenevus Maryland Fire District to purchase a new fire truck. The funding was allocated through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.
“This is an important investment for the Schenevus Maryland Fire District,” said Senator Gillibrand. “These firefighters put their lives on the line to keep our families safe. We need to ensure that they have the best equipment available to perform their jobs, and save more lives.”
“We are very excited to receive this grant and feel very fortunate,” said Schenevus Maryland Fire Chief Pete Comino. “Thanks to Senator Gillibrand for all of her help with securing the grant.”
The Schenevus Maryland Fire District, located in Schenevus, covers 52 square-miles and has nearly 50 volunteers. The funds will go toward purchasing a brand new truck to replace their current one that is 36 years old.
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, established by FEMA within the Department of Homeland Security, is part of an effort to increase the nation’s emergency response preparation. This program provides federal funding to first responder organizations for the acquisition of personal protective equipment, firefighting vehicles, and emergency response equipment. The funds also help provide emergency response trainings.
