U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today announced that Binghamton University was awarded two separate grants totaling more than $400,000 for medical research. The overall funding is comprised of two grants that are valued at $243,412.00 and $200,238.00, respectively. The resources were allocated through the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) and the National Institute on Aging (NIA). The funding will be used to research and develop an implantable self-powered load sensor for total knee replacement health monitoring and to study perivascular transport of solutes from the brain.
“Binghamton University is a nationally recognized hub for medical technology research, and these federal awards will advance that status. This federal investment will facilitate this ground-breaking medical research and spur job creation in high-tech and medical sectors,” said Senator Schumer. “Binghamton University is an important component of the regional economy and its research and innovations have national significance. I will continue to work to ensure the University has the resources it needs to thrive.”
“These federal funds would allow Binghamton University to continue its groundbreaking medical research,” said Senator Gillibrand. “Investing in our research and development capabilities would help advance medical diagnosis and treatment while promoting economic growth in the community.I will continue to support more federal funding for medical and scientific research universities, so that more young people can be inspired to do research, test their ideas, and help make our communities better places to live.”
HHS grant funding will be used to fund research and development of implantable self-powered load sensors for knee replacement health monitoring and to research perivascular transport of solutes from the brain. NIAMS and NIA are U.S. government agencies within the National Institute of Health. The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) specializes in the research of diseases of the bones, joints, muscles and skin, while the National Institute on Aging (NIA) focuses on research that expands our understanding of the aging process and diseases that are typically associated with growing older.
