Washington, DC –U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today issued the following statement on the Senate Dream Act vote today:
“Cada estudiante en Nueva York y en todo el país merece la oportunidad de realizar todo su potencial,” indicó la Senadora Gillibrand. “La ley actual castiga injustamente a miles de jóvenes que se han recibido toda su educación en los Estados Unidos y conocen a los Estados Unidos como su único hogar. Esta legislación permitiría que 50,000 a 65,000 jóvenes tengan la oportunidad de adquirir una buena educación y que también sean elegibles para prestar servicio militar. El antiguo Secretario de Estado en los Estados Unidos Colin Powell está apoyando a esta legislación públicamente, llamándola supremamente importante para nuestra seguridad nacional.”
“Como co-auspiciadora de el DREAM Act, estoy profundamente decepcionada que a los estudiantes que han trabajado con dedicación y han seguido las reglas se les haya negando la oportunidad que merecen para obtener una buena educación y ganarse el camino hacia un estatus legal. No podemos detenernos aquí. Debemos unirnos rápidamente para avanzar hacia una reforma migratoria integral.”
