Washington, DC – U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today announced $1,820,000 in federal funding, including a loan of $1,270,000 and a grant of $550,000 for the Town of Sterling in Cayuga County. This federal funding is provided through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grants program, and the loan will be financed over a period of 38 years.
Specifically, the funds will be used to construct a new water district in the Town of Sterling. The project will include the installation of approximately 25,000 feet of water main distribution piping, hydrants, and valves, serving approximately 90 equivalent dwelling units (EDU’s). This project will help improve the private water quality and quantity deficiencies for residents.
“This federal investment is good news for the Town of Sterling and Cayuga County,” said Senator Schumer. “These federal funds for the Town of Sterling will help boost economic development, protect public health and support critical water infrastructure upgrades. I am proud to announce this federal investment and will continue to fight to make sure that rural communities have the resources they need to build, protect and maintain their infrastructure.”
“These federal funds will help provide a safe and reliable source of water for the residents in the Town of Sterling,” said Senator Gillibrand, a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee. “New Yorkers should be able to trust the quality of their water supply, and investments such as this one are critical for the health of our local communities and local economic development. I will continue to fight for funding in the Senate that helps improve the health and quality of life for New Yorkers.”
USDA Rural Development’s Water and Waste Disposal Program provides loans and grants to ensure that the necessary investments are made in water and wastewater infrastructure to deliver safe drinking water and protect the environment in rural areas.
