U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today announced Syracuse Hancock International Airport is set to receive $3,904,200 in U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) funds for airport facility upgrades. Specifically, the grant will help upgrade three deicing pads and the snow melt pad to improve airport safety, and improve travel during the winter months.
“This funding will ensure that Syracuse Hancock International Airport has the equipment it needs to remain safely open during those unexpected winter storms,” said Senator Schumer. “I applaud the DOT for helping Syracuse Hancock continue to serve residents and all visitors, no matter the season.”
“This is a smart investment for Syracuse Hancock International Airport,” Senator Gillibrand said. “This federal funding will help keep travelers and businesses safe and on the move during the winter months, while keeping the airport sound for years to come. With better access to Central New York all year round, we can strengthen the local economy.”
“This is a very important project for our airport,” said Syracuse Mayor Stephanie A. Miner. “With over 6 months of deicing taking place during the average winter season, it is critical that we keep our facilities in top condition. This funding is important as it will allow us to make necessary improvements to the infrastructure of the three deicing facilities.”
Syracuse Hancock International Airport will use the DOT funding to upgrade three deicing pads and the snow melt pad that were constructed in 1996, and have gone through wear and tear of Central New York winters. The upgrade will help to maintain the structural integrity of the runway pavement and ensure the safety of passengers and business while keeping traffic on the move through the airport during the winter months.
