Today, U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced $191,794,858 in federal funding has been awarded to 680 different organizations in New York State working to end homelessness. The funding was allocated through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Continuum of Care (CoC) Program. The CoC Program provides funding to non-profits, as well as local and state governments, to quickly rehouse homeless individuals and families and promote access to programs that encourage self-sufficiency among individuals and families experiencing homelessness.
“One homeless family is one too many, and we must do everything we can to help provide those truly in need with a place to live,” said Senator Schumer. “By supporting affordable housing initiatives across New York State and helping organizations work with homeless families and individuals to get them back on their feet, we can make a real dent in homelessness across the state. This is a sound investment in those in our community who are most in need and in New York State’s future.”
“No family should ever be without a place to live and this critical funding will help New Yorkers in need get access to housing and help end homelessness across the state,” said Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. “We must support our local affordable housing initiatives and programs that encourage self-sufficiency. Access to housing is essential for the health of our families and the economic strength of our communities.”
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Continuum of Care (CoC) Program is designed to promote communitywide commitment to the goal of ending homelessness; provide funding for efforts by nonprofit providers, and State and local governments to quickly rehouse homeless individuals and families while minimizing the trauma and dislocation caused to homeless individuals, families, and communities by homelessness; promote access to and effect utilization of mainstream programs by homeless individuals and families; and optimize self-sufficiency among individuals and families experiencing homelessness.
