Washington, D.C. – New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today met with the Sisters of St. Joseph – an order of 30 Roman Catholic nuns from Brentwood – to talk about ways they can work together to support their work for the Long Island community. Senator Gillibrand talked with the Sisters of St. Joseph about strengthening English as a Second Language programs throughout the Brentwood public schools, which help women in the area succeed and prosper in their community.
“Brentwood families are fortunate to have the dedication of the Sisters of St. Joseph on their side, working hard to improve their lives,” Senator Gillibrand said. “I am committed to supporting them along the way by working to create more good-paying jobs for Long Island, making smart investments to make health care more affordable and accessible to all families, and investing in education to give Long Island students the foundation they need to succeed.”
The Sisters of St. Joseph is the largest order of sisters on Long Island. They provide a broad range of services to the Brentwood community. Originally serving primarily as educators and nurses, the Sisters of St. Joseph now provide services from social work to therapy and health care for the Brentwood community.
As Senator Gillibrand travels to every corner of New York, she meets with community and business leaders, local elected officials and everyday New York families. She knows what Long Island families are up against in this economy, and is working hard with the Obama Administration and her colleagues in Congress to improve the lives of all New Yorkers by creating jobs and getting our economy turned around, fixing the broken health care system and making critical investments in education and renewable energy to put New York on a path for a strong, bright future.
