Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today announced $63,115 in federal funding for the City of Cortland Fire Department on behalf of 12 local Fire Districts to purchase smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to be distributed to families throughout the community after a voluntary home inspection. The money was allocated through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S) Grants Program.
“This is an important investment for the City of Cortland Fire Department,” Senator Gillibrand said. “We need to make sure that families have the basic necessities needed to keep their homes safe. This federal grant will help the Cortland Fire Department inspect local homes and distribute tools to encourage fire safety and fire prevention.”
“The Cortland Fire Department is pleased to hear from Senator Gillibrand’s Office that the grant application for fire prevention activity has been awarded by the Federal Government,” said City of Cortland Fire Chief Charles Glover. “We wish to thank Senator Gillibrand for her continued support of our efforts to seek grant funding of vital programs that continue to provide a safer community here in the City of Cortland.”
The City of Cortland Fire Department will use the federal funding to voluntarily inspect single family homes in the community and distribute smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to those in need.
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant FP&S Program, established by FEMA within the Department of Homeland Security, support projects that enhance the safety of the public and firefighters from fire and related hazards. The primary goal is to target high-risk populations and reduce injury and prevent death.
