Federal Funding Reimburses New York City Housing Authority For Massive Expenses Incurred When Responding To The COVID-19 Crisis
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced today $38,477,127.25 in federal funding for the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) for emergency protective measures taken to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. NYCHA responded by providing personal protection equipment (PPE) and sanitizing services for common areas to prevent the spread of the virus. NYCHA also employed over 2,000 individuals to respond to the threat of the pandemic, including maintenance workers, cleaning crews, and supervisors to consistently clean facilities and ensure a safe working and living environment for the community.
“I’m proud to deliver these federal funds to NYCHA to cover the substantial costs of PPE and other protective measures required during the COVID-19 pandemic to protect NYCHA employees and hundreds of thousands of residents,” said Senator Schumer. “I fought hard to secure historic funding levels for FEMA through the American Rescue Plan and prior COVID response and relief bills, and have delivered funding to New York to respond to and recover from the pandemic. These federal funds reimburse NYCHA for protective measures taken to increase safety and mitigate the spread of COVID-19, and help replenish NYCHA’s resources following the public health and economic devastation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.”
“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, emergency protective measures like providing personal protective equipment (PPE) and facilities sanitization were vital to preventing the spread of COVID-19,” said Senator Gillibrand. “These critical federal funds will reimburse the New York City Housing Authority for the costs of these emergency protective measures that helped minimize the threat to the health and safety of the general public. I’m proud to deliver this important funding and will continue to fight to keep our communities safe.”
This Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding is authorized under Section 403 of the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act.
