SCHENECTADY – U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and Congressman Paul Tonko today announced that the City of Schenectady will receive $3,207,442 in funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to develop viable urban communities, support housing and a suitable living environment for low- and moderate-income individuals, and improve the number, quality and operations of emergency shelters for homeless individuals and families.
“This funding is great news for Schenectady and its residents,” said Senator Schumer. “Now, the city will be able to create viable communities and support housing development for those with low to moderate income. Creating a suitable living environment for everyone will give them the fair shot they need to advance economically. America is strongest when the economy provides that fair shot for everyone.”
“Access to stable housing is essential for the health of our families and the economic strength of our communities,” said Senator Gillibrand. “This funding is a major investment for Schenectady and will help bridge the gap in quality housing for more residents in need, as well as create opportunities for redevelopment of neighborhoods in need.”
“During tough economic times, it is critical that we provide those who are struggling with a greater chance at success. This funding will help develop neighborhoods in need, assist local governments to meet their needs and priorities, and provide essential services to the most vulnerable citizens in the Capital Region,” said Rep. Tonko.
“Funding for the development of quality housing in the City of Schenectady provides us with the ability to connect residents with suitable living arrangements and supports continued improvements in our neighborhoods,” said Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy.
